Al joined the Syracuse Turners in 1942 at the age of 18. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European
campaign reaching the rank of Sergeant and received a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Al
obtained a degree of Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Recreation from Indiana University School of Health,
Physical education & Recreation. After graduation, he worked in the Chicago area and then returned to Syracuse where he
was employed with the North Syracuse School District for over 35 years. Al taught physical education and served as a high
school gymnastics, wrestling, and track coach for many years winning many sectional and NYS championships. He also
served as the golf coach in the same school district for over 40 years. Al loved his many years of teaching and was an
inspiration to so many of his former students.
Al also was an instructor in our Syracuse Turner youth gymnastics classes in the 1950’s and 1960’s while we had our
gymnastics program. Al and his wife Barb were our Syracuse Turners Goodwill Ambassadors as they traveled through the
country and Europe visiting as many Turners clubs as they could.
Al was a “legend” at our club and our club historian and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a 76 year member of
our club. He taught many of us how to be a “True Turner” putting others before yourself and to promote Turnerism as best
as you can. He was best known for his crazy “antics” and silly hats, crazy ideas and especially his singing of great Turner
songs. He was forever the “teacher” and we, his “students”, loved sitting around singing silly drinking songs and listening to
him as he would recite/sing one drink toast after another.
Al is now with his beautiful wife, Barb who predeceased him in 1999. Al is survived by his son Stephan and his wife, Regina,
his daughter Heidi and her son Eichel and many nieces and nephews along with his adopted Turner family.
Forever in our hearts - Your memories will be shared for many years to come.

To work any of the games, please contact Jeff Dargiewicz
In addition, door prizes are always needed. A small turkey, a bottle of wine, etc. are great raffle prizes.
Last year we had a GREAT turnout with basket raffles and thank everyone for their donations. This year we want to do
the same thing so let’s see our inner club groups get “creative” and donate a basket to help our club with our expenses.
If you don’t bowl or play bunco, etc. please feel free to donate one from your family or get a few friends to get one
together. We all know that the “More the Merrier”! Any questions on these basket raffles please see Judy Bacon or
Kathy Nolan

BUNKO NIGHT IS COMING BACK! CALLING ALL TURNER MEMBERS!!!!!

We are looking to start up our BUNKO night again this fall which will be held on the third Wednesday of the Fall/Winter/Spring months at the club. This is really fun dice game. We are going to continue with the same format as last year with one large group to everyone an opportunity to play with all participants. We will need to know who is interested in playing this season by October 1st. If you played last season please make a phone call to Dolores Petrone at 315-468-1614 to confirm that you will be continuing this season as we don’t want to assume anyone will continue this year unless we know for sure. If you are interested in joining as a new player, please contact Dolores so that you can be put on the list. We will need some substitutes so if you can’t commit to play once a month give Dolores a call and she can put you on the sub list. Our start date will be Wednesday, October 18, at 7pm (so our golfers can get as much golf in before it gets too cold). Please arrive a little early to pay your entry fee, get your table card assignment and purchase a beverage or two before we start. The cost per person is $10.00 a month with the first month paying $20.00 (holding $10 in your account in case you cannot play and do not get a sub). It is your responsibility to get the sub. They do not need to be club members. Prizes will be awarded to the l st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th , 5 th and 6 th place winners along with a most BUNKO’s winner and of course a Boobie prize as well. As in past seasons if you want to bring a snack to pass it will be welcomedd

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!

Last year we started a new “volunteer” program at the club to help us save some money. Each month, one “in-house group” (i.e. the Board, bowling leagues, golf league, bunco league, etc.) volunteered in the kitchen one Friday per month. That organization was responsible for buying the food for the Friday night dinners along with cooking, waiting on tables, etc. It worked out really well and we would like to have all of our leagues or even families to please think about volunteering for one Friday dinner to save us the money on the expense of our payroll. This really helped the club to save some money. If you are interested in doing this, please contact Heather Hess to let her know. Thank you for your cooperation!!

Dinner Specials for the coming “season” begin on Friday, September 14 th with a Chicken & Biscuit dinner as the weekly special. On Friday, September 21 st it will be our guest chef Bob Rodriguez cooking his awesome Beef Rouladen (yes the same one he makes for our Fruehlingsfest).. The next week will be Kathy Nolan cooking an awesome Pork Roast dinner and Kathy will again be volunteering in the kitchen on Friday, October 5 th with a yummy meatloaf dinner. We really need your support so please stop in and have a bite to eat and say hi to your Turner friends & family! Look for weekly drink specials as well!!!

Please watch your Spirit and the weekly email Blasts for details

and check out the calendars in this month’s Spirit for the dates!!

If you’re NOT getting an email blast, please email me at
judybacon@hotmail.com so I can get you on the list.

Or if you see me at the club, just give me your email address so I can add you in for the fun events happening at the club..
